Brief updates: hiring for my team, new interviews, upcoming events
Hi from New York, where I'm enjoying the return of Yankees baseball and getting ready for some upcoming travel. I'll be in Krakow for the World News Media Congress May 4–6 and in Detroit for a live taping of Nikita Roy's Newsroom Robots podcast on May 19. Hope to see some of you at either event.
In the meantime, I wanted to share a few updates from my day job:
- I am hiring for an engineer with both journalism and machine-learning experience to join my team at The New York Times. The role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. If you're on this email list and want to apply or recommend someone for the job, feel free to hit reply and let me know (but also put in an application quickly, as we've started interviews).
- I gave an interview to Mark Yarm for Depth Perception, a newsletter from the innovative news startup Longlead. We talked about how The Times is using AI, where we've drawn redlines around the technology, our team's philosophy ("Start with why, not AI"), and more. Mark was one of the first people to reach out when I started this job, so I was thrilled to finally make it happen.
- I also spoke to Joshua Rothman, a staff writer at The New Yorker, for his weekly column Open Questions, which focused on how AI will change news consumption and production. I gave an uncharacteristically upbeat assessment, focused on using AI for research and investigations, and shared another mantra on our team: "Never shift the burden of verification back to the reader."
On a more personal note, I was overwhelmed by the response to my reflection on Quartz. The best part was hearing from so many Quartz alumni and readers, who had their own lovely memories. But not everyone enjoyed the piece! It's only fair that I link to Jim Spanfeller's comment on LinkedIn and interview with Press Gazette, which told a very different story. But I meant what I wrote about laying Quartz to rest, so I will.
